HOPEWELL TOWNSHIP -- Police say a portion of Route 29 in Hopewell Township remains closed in both directions after high winds and heavy rain from Monday's storm downed trees and power lines.
The road is closed from Route 518 in Lambertville to Route 546 (Washington Crossing-Pennington Road).
Emergency officials are expecting the power outages to last for an extended period of time.
As of 11:40 a.m., more than 1,000 customers in Mercer County were still without power: 645 JCP&L customers and 494 PSE&G customers, with the majority of outages in Hopewell.
The Union Fire Company & Rescue Squad firehouse on Route 29 will be open until 9 p.m. as a resource center for residents to charge electronic devices and sit in air-conditioning. Potable water is also available, but residents need to bring their own containers.
Despite the road closure, police will be helping to direct traffic to the firehouse.
For residents in the eastern portion of the township, potable water is available at the public works building. The municipal building is also open as a resource center until 4:30 p.m.
