Children at the Trenton Boys and Girls Club met with local safety authorities about the being safe in the water.

TRENTON -- The Boys and Girls Club of Trenton this summer again partnered with a pool safety foundation to teach its children about water safety.

At the four-day camp, commonly called "Zac camp," children were instructed by local first responders and took lessons on boat safety taught by Ed Butler, as well as in-pool instruction exercises.

"This is our fourth year doing this camp and the most important thing it does is it raises the confidence and ease for our children in the pool," Patricia Lee-Hines, senior program director of The Boys and Girls Club of Trenton, said.

Lee-Hines said the camp, which ran for three hours, drew more than 100 children ages five to nine.

The Zac Foundation was established in 2008 by Connecticut parents Brian and Karen Cohn after their 6-year-old son Zachary Archer Cohn drowned in a pool drain accidents in their backyard swimming pool.

In an effort to teach the children about water safety, the program uses a book written by Cohn's parents, "The Polar Bear Who Couldn't, Wouldn't Swim."

The children graduated from the four-day camp on Thursday and received a medal, a water watcher badge, copies of "The Polar Bear Who Couldn't, Wouldn't Swim," a T-shirt and pool towel.
