The National Junior Tennis and Learning of Trenton will lead tennis championships in July and August.
TRENTON -- Trenton will host tennis championships for all age groups this July and August for the first time in 41 years, courtesy of the National Junior Tennis and Learning of Trenton.
The nonprofit organization will lead championships for boys and girls ages 15 and younger, boys and girls between 16 and 18, and divisions for men and women.
The championships will be played at the Junior Champions Tennis Center beginning July 25 for the 18 and younger groups. The men and women's divisions will take the court on August 1.
In order to participate, entrants must be current or former New Jersey Tennis League of Trenton participants or staff members; Trenton residents, former residents within the past 25 years or any past participant in the tournament.
Those interested must pay an entry fee of one new can of tournament grade tennis balls.
The last time the Trenton tennis championships were held, the current International Tennis Federation President David Haggerty was one of the winners in 1975, National Junior Tennis and Learning Executive Director Robert Howland said.
In the summer of 2014, the city re-christened the Junior Champions Tennis Center and the Daniel L. Haggerty Jr. Pavilion following a $1 million restoration project of the courts at Cadwalader Park.
The National Junior Tennis and Learning of Trenton strives to use tennis, education and mentoring programs to put under-privileged youth on a successful path.
The organization hosts several other charitable events throughout the year, including a young professionals mixer on August 25, a golf outing on September 19 and the annual Capital Cup Tennis Tournament and 5K run on September 25.
