The current fire started Friday at Range 59C and continued to burn through the weekend.

JOINT BASE MCGUIRE-DIX-LAKEHURST -- Joint base firefighters on Monday continued to extinguish a fire that's burned 2,500 acres on a Fort Dix range since Friday, the base said.

The fire is the fourth significant fire on the base this month.

Last week, a fire on the Pemberton Township side of the base caused temporary evacuations and consumed over 220 acres. That fire burned Wednesday, June 22, to Friday, June 24.

The current fire started Friday, June 24, on the northern side of the base, at Range 59C, and continued to burn through the weekend.

It's currently contained within the range and has consumed about 2,500 acres, a base spokesman said Monday.

"Currently, there are no reports of damage to property, injuries or evacuations in effect. Residents in the surrounding area north of the base will see increased smoke conditions during this time," the base said in an announcement Monday afternoon.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.

Smoke from the fire caused residents in Mercer County to make calls to police and 911 this past weekend, inquiring about the burning smell. Police departments responded with social media alerts that the fire was on the joint base.

Two weeks ago, a fire burned about 2,000 acres near Range 29A, and a smaller fire burned about 390 acres on Range 59C days before that.
