The cleanup is from 9 a.m. to noon on Saturday

TRENTON -- Armed with trash bags and gloves, volunteers will spend Saturday morning picking up litter in Cadwalader Park in the hope that others will follow their lead.

"Everybody should take pride in their park," said Randy Baum, who lives in the city's Cadwalader Heights neighborhood and is chairman of the Cadwalader Park Alliance. "Maybe this will spur other groups in other parts of Trenton to pick up trash as well."

The cleanup is sponsored by the alliance, which helps raise money for the park, the Cadwalader Heights Civic Association and the city. It will run from 9 a.m. to noon.

The cleanup will coincide with an announcement by Mayor Eric Jackson on $2 million in planned park improvements. Baum said the city received money from the state's Green Acres program that will go toward new playground equipment and renovating the picnic grove.

"Hopefully this will initiate a little change in attitude and get people interested in the park again," he said.

Cadwalader Park is the only New Jersey park designed by Frederick Law Olmsted, the famous landscape architect who helped design Central Park.
