Firefighters battle 2-alarm fire at Trenton high-rise

Trenton firefighters responded to a 2-alarm fire at a Carteret Arms fourth-floor apartment at 1:30 p.m.

TRENTON -- A fire at the Carteret Arms apartment building on West State Street Thursday afternoon grew to a two alarms before city firefighters got it under control.

Fire officials said it could have been intentionally set.

Firefighters were dispatched to the building at 1:30 p.m. and brought the fire under control around 2 p.m., Deputy Chief Robert Tharp said.

Smoke spread through the stairwell and some other floors of the complex, Tharp said, but the fire did not leave the apartment.

No injuries were reported, Tharp said. Five engine companies, two ladders, rescue, three battalion chiefs and one deputy chief responded to the scene.

Though the cause of the fire is still unknown, Tharp said it is possible the fire was intentionally set.

Arson investigators spoke with the resident at the scene, who told firefighters she was not in the apartment at the time of the fire.

The fire was still under investigation Thursday afternoon.
