The second phase of a project to improve three taxiways at Trenton-Mercer Airport is complete

EWING -- The second phase of a project to improve three taxiways at Trenton-Mercer Airport is complete, county officials announced Tuesday.

The work is part of a multiphase rehabilitation that involves reconstructing Taxiways H, B and F with new pavement, lighting and markings.

A $2.7 million grant from the Federal Aviation Administration covered the majority of the cost. The county and state split the rest of the tab.

The FAA has approved another $4.5 million for the next phase of the project.

Work began earlier this month on upgrading the airport's perimeter fencing to a height of 10 feet with a foot of barbed wire on top. Several access gates will also be upgraded as part of the 120-day project.

Tuesday's announcement comes as the airport's revenue and number of passengers flying continues to grow, Mercer County Executive Brian Hughes said.

A recent FAA report shows that Trenton-Mercer served 394,815 passengers and took in more than $33 million in revenue for the 12-month period that ended in March, Hughes said.

"I believe this confirms, once and for all, that there is an overwhelming demand for commercial passenger service here and it is finally being met," he said. "It also demonstrates that this is a very viable market for any airline willing to make a commitment here."
