Both newer and more-established markets continue to flourish in Mercer County

As the interest and demand for locally grown produce and goods continues to increase, so too has the number of farmers markets cropping up.

Mercer County's newest market will open Sunday in The College of New Jersey's Campus Town.

Greg Lentine, director of campus development for the developer PRC Group, said a consultant that has worked with the West Windsor Community Farmers Market -- now in its 13th year -- was hired to help get it off the ground.

The hope is that it will not only give students and residents a chance to bring home fresh produce, but also bring more shoppers to Campus Town's stores and restaurants.

Elsewhere in the county, both newer and more-established markets continue to flourish.

While seasonal fruit and vegetables are the staple of the markets, many of them also carry other items grown or made by local farmers and artisans, including freshly made breads and cheese, meats, herbs and honey.

Some, like Trenton's Greenwood Avenue Farmers Market, offer other activities aimed at improving the quality of life for its customers, including health screenings, nutrition education and cooking demonstrations. Starting June 27, it will be the first market in the state to provide free dinner for children ages 3 to 18 as part of the federal Summer Food Service Program.
