HOPEWELL TOWNSHIP -- One motorcyclist was seriously injured and one is under arrest following a police officer's pursuit of four motorcycles on Bear Tavern Road Saturday evening, police said.

Township police said Officer Mark Panzano was driving south on Bear Tavern Road near Pennington-Titusville Road at about 5:20 p.m. when four northbound motorcycles passed him traveling 66 mile per hour.

The posted speed limit is 45 miles per hour.

Panzano turned his patrol car around and drove north after them, and activated his emergency lights and siren in an attempt to stop them, police said.

The motorcyclists responded, police said, by increasing their speed and passing other vehicles on the road.

Bear Tavern Road turns into Harbourton-Rocktown Road and Panzano lost sight of the motorcycles on a curve to the right, just south of Harbourton-Mount Airy Road, police said.

The officer continued driving north and found two of the motorcycles had left the road and crashed just south of the Harbourton-Mount Airy Road intersection, police said.

Panzano stopped to tend to the crashed riders. The other two motorcyclists did not stop, police said.

One rider, a 21-year-old Trenton man, crashed his 2009 Kawasaki into a mailbox and small tree. He was seriously injured and taken to a local hospital by the Union Fire Co. & Rescue Squad and Capital Health paramedics.

Police did not immediately identify himHe was not identified by police pending family notification, police said. Charges are pending against the man, police said.

The other crashed rider, Raimy D. Valdez, 21, of Morrisville, Pa., struck a wood post and rail fence with his 1998 Kawasaki, police said.

Valdez was uninjured, and arrested at the scene.

Police charged him eluding police, speeding, passing over a double yellow line and reckless driving. He was in police custody Saturday night.

Officers closed Harbourton-Rocktown Road between Harbourton-Mount Airy Road and Harbourton-Pleasant Valley Road for three hours to investigate.

Officer James Hoffman, Detective Louis Vastola, and Mercer County Prosecutor's Office Detective Don Santora are investigating the crashes.
