UPDATE: Death of teen killed by train ruled an accident

EWING -- The Ewing school district is mourning the death of 18-year-old Alex Martinez, who was struck and killed by a CSX train Friday night.

"His loss resonates throughout the district and our deepest sympathies and condolences are extended to his family and friends," Superintendent Michael Nitti wrote in a statement.

Martinez was fatally struck around 6:10 p.m. Friday as the train was traveling south to Philadelphia from Kearny, CSX spokesman Rob Doolittle said.

Police previously said the crash occurred near Route 29 on the Ewing side of the Lower Ferry Road Bridge, but the train eventually came to a stop in Lower Makefield Township, Pa.

The train involved in the crash consisted of two locomotives, 25 rail cars of mixed freight and three empty rail cars, Doolittle said.

Martinez attended Ewing Public Schools all his life -- Lore Elementary, Fisher Middle and Ewing High schools.

Mental and emotional health experts were available at the high school on Monday to provide grief counseling for students, staff and community members.

A GoFundMe page has also been started to help his family.

"Alex loves everyone and he'd do anything to help the ones around him," the page said. "Alex is one of a kind. He made a positive impact on everyone's life he entered."
