TRENTON -- The city's fire department honored the heroics of numerous firefighters and officers with valor awards at a ceremony Wednesday evening.
The awards covered rescues and other exemplary work by firefighters during the years 2013 to 2015.
Several city officials joined Mayor Eric Jackson - who was presented with a turnout jacket with "mayor" on the back - with firefighters' family and friends.
The awards:
* Actions at a house fire on Dickinson Street: Capt. Dave Smolka, firefighters Jeffrey Sawasky, Hiriam Santiago and Ron Ettenger.
* Actions on an EMS maternity call on Bryn Mawr Avenue: Capt. Joseph Bryce and firefighters Duane Johnson, Scott Fanning, and George Espinal.
* Actions at a house fire on Bayard Street: Firefighters Joseph Szabo and Gavril Hancs.
* Actions at a house fire on Elmer Street: Capt Michael Fitzpatrick, firefighters Donald Dawson, Reynel Rodriguez, Jose Gomez and David Houseworth.
* Actions at a house fire on Pennington Avenue: Capt. John Barone, firefighters Michael Brown, Kenneth Walters, Ryan Aquilino and Naseeb Washington.
* For a water rescue in the Delaware River: Capt James Scott, acting captains Scott Sirak and Steve Yarosz, firefighters Michael Szabo, Ronald Ettenger, Edward LaMothe, John Britton and Robert Bland.
* For a rescue utilizing rapelling ropes on West State Street: Battalion Chief Augustine "Gus" Tackacs, Capt. Mark Augustyn, firefighters Michael Brown, Steve Rosati, Evan Kontos, Napoleon Harris and Carlos Negron.
* For a rescue in the Delaware River: Firefighters Loranzo Square, Wayne Wolk, Miguel Acosta-Martinez and George Espinal.
* For a swift-water rescue in the Assunpink Creek: Capt. Kevin Rice, firefighters Edward Lamothe, Melvin McKellar and Evan Kontos.
* For an vehicle extrication on Route 129 at Cass Street: Capt Todd Willever, Capt. Mark Augustyn and firefighters Edward Lamothe, Steve Rosati, Melvin McKellar, Richard Cope, Robert Bland, Dean Gallo, Paul Belardo and Domenick Stillitano
The department awarded Brotherhood Awards to: Brain Hawkins of Hawks Towing, Vito Adessa of Load Rite Trailers, Lyn Scott of the American Red Cross and firefighters Steve Yarosz and Ralston Denton.
