Two women who were charged with assaulting a man with a brick appeared in court Tuesday for bail hearings

TRENTON - Two women accused of helping beat a man with a brick on the street were actually trying to break up the fight, their attorney, Caroline Turner said Wednesday.

Najih Jones, 18 and Angel Bernard, 32, appeared for separate bail hearings in an aggravated assault and robbery case Wednesday morning. The women are accused of assaulting a man on the street with a brick and robbing him. Two men, Malcom Green and Darren Picott were also charged but released on bail before Wednesday.

The four people approached a 52-year-old man on the 100 block of North Broad Street last week, hit him with a brick and robbed him, Mercer County Assistant Prosecutors said during the hearing Wednesday.

They added that a witness identified the four people and that, when police found them, the suspects were carrying some of the 52-year-old's property.

But for Turner the case is a, "fundamental miscarriage of justice."

She said that the two women were trying to break up a fight, which started between Green and the victim over drug money.

"They both told me exactly the same story," she said of talking to Jones and Bernard about the assault.

"They had to stop what could have been a murder," she said.

Turner claimed that Green pointed the finger at Jones and Bernard because he didn't want to take the full fall for the assault.

Superior Court Judge Peter Warshaw kept the bail for both women at $50,000 Wednesday.
