Two women were hospitalized with gunshot wounds Wednesday afternoon
TRENTON -- Hours after the mayor and police director called on residents to help stem the gun violence in the city, shots rang out in a Trenton neighborhood Wednesday afternoon.
Trenton police are investigating a shooting that sent two women to the hospital.
Police responded to the first block of Conrad Street at 4:01 p.m. for reports of a shooting in progress, Lt. Stephen Varn said.
Officers arrived at the house to find that two women -- one in her 30s, the other in her 60s -- had been struck by gunfire.
Both were taken to Capital Health Regional Medical Center in Trenton, but their conditions were not immediately known, Varn said.
The department's Shooting Response Team is investigating and a person of interest has been detained, Varn said.
This is the second shooting in as many days. On Tuesday, a man had to undergo emergency surgery after he was shot on Passaic Street.
Last week saw the shooting deaths of 16-year-old Ciony Kirkman and 26-year-old Jermaine Johnson.
"The recent spate of gun violence has shaken our sanity, tested our faith, but not our resolve," Mayor Eric Jackson said at a noon press conference addressing the rising number of shootings.
