The call was played in the third day of a Trenton man's murder trial for a 2014 shooting
TRENTON - State police detective Joseph Itri was "shocked" by what he heard on a 911 call the morning of Enrico Smalley's killing two years ago.
"The guy was just standing over someone, shooting at him," a voice on the 911 call said when the tape was played in court Tuesday during Itri's testimony.
Itri was speaking during the third day of a murder trial for Shaheed Brown, a Trenton man accused of shooting 20-year-old Smalley to death outside of a Trenton bar in the summer of 2014.
Brown left Trenton shortly after Smalley's death and was found in Newark a month later. He went to trial in the fall but it ended in a hung jury.
For the morning of the third day, Mercer County Prosecutors focused on Itri - the lead detective in the murder - and his account of the evidence he discovered just hours after the crime.
One of the primary pieces of evidence was that of a 911 call made by a man who said he was driving by the bar on Poplar Street and North Clinton Avenue in the early morning when Smalley was shot.
No 'smoking gun' in Trenton murder case
The man did not identify himself on the tape but said that he could see from his car someone with dreadlocks standing over a man on the sidewalk and firing multiple shots.
He said the man had a white shirt and ran away with another man.
The tape was enough to stun Itri who called it "very significant."
Brown had dreadlocks at the time but traded them in for a clean-shaved look just before his arrest, prosecutors have said.
Itri's testimony continued Tuesday morning with prosecutors showing video surveillance of the outside of the bar earlier in the night. They claimed a man with dreadlocks and a white T-shirt walking in front of the bar was Brown. He was joined by two other men, Itri testified.
The courtroom broke for lunch in the middle of Itri's testimony but the trial is expected to continue Wednesday.
