TRENTON -- A man shot on a West Ward street Friday afternoon died a short time later at a Trenton hospital, police said.

Police responding to a 3:55 p.m. call of a shooting in progress found a man on the first block of Hillcrest Avenue, off Stuyvesant Avenue opposite Cadwalader Park.

Jermaine Johnson, 26, of Trenton, had been shot several times.

Johnson was taken by ambulance to Capital Health Regional Medical where he died at about 4:30 p.m., authorities said.

The Mercer County Homicide Task Force is investigating.

Also responding to the call was a Trenton Fire Department engine crew, who assisted with performing first aid on Johnson, as well as first responders from Ewing.

The homicide is the second this week in Trenton.

On Wednesday, 16-year-old Ciony Kirkman, who was wounded Sunday evening in a shooting in the South Ward, died at a city hospital.

The teen was one of seven occupants - all juveniles - of a minivan that was fired on at the intersection of Jersey Street and Home Avenue at about 6:25 p.m.

Police have not announced any arrests in the girl's killing.
