The district's preschool program will now be run out of three elementary schools

TRENTON -- The city's preschool programs will be run out of three schools next year following the district's decision to close its early childhood learning center amid a $5.9 million budget shortfall.

P.J. Hill, Grant and Wilson elementary schools will now serve as the in-district preschool sites.

The closing of Stokes Early Childhood Center was part of the budget cuts that also included 164 net layoffs. The program is overseen by the state Department of Education's Division of Early Childhood and currently has 199 three- and four-year-olds enrolled.

The following open houses will be held:

  • Grant: May 17, 9:30 a.m.
  • Wilson: May 18, 9:30 a.m.
  • P.J. Hill: May 19, 9:30 a.m.

Parents are encouraged to call the preschool hotline at 609-656-4900, ext. 5667 on Mondays and Wednesdays from 9 a.m. to noon and 1 to 3 p.m. for more information on registration.
