A tractor-trailer spilled gallons of diesel fuel on the road; stray metal on the road is blamed
TRENTON - A tractor-trailer driving northbound on Route 1 in Trenton spilled gallons of diesel fuel onto the road, causing a closure of the highway for more than an hour and grinding traffic to a halt throughout the city, fire officials said Thursday.
The spill happened around 7 a.m. when the truck hit a stray piece of scrap metal in the road that ripped a hole in the fuel tank, Battalion Chief Terry Mulryne said.
The spill forced the closure of both lanes of the highway for about 90 minutes while the truck was moved and the fuel contained, Mulryne said.
By 9:30 a.m. state Department of Environmental Protection workers were at the scene, Mulryne said.
