ROBBINSVILLE -- Schools in Robbinsville are closed for normal instruction today, but numerous students and staff will be in the high school receiving grief counseling, a day after their superintendent was killed in a car crash.
Steve Mayer, 52, was struck and killed early Tuesday as he jogged with his dog on Robbinsville-Edinburg Road. A 17-year-old Robbinsville High School student hit Mayer as she was driving to school.
The teen was not identified and no charges have been filed in the crash, police have said.
The district is receiving assistance from three area school districts, who have sent counselors to Robbinsville. And the Mercer County Traumatic Loss Coalition is also assisting the district, officials said.
The district said in a statement they are staggering the counseling sessions throughout the day so all age groups can can be accommodated. The district's three schools have an enrollment of over 2,900 students.
"I get the sense that the administration and staff are well prepared for today," school board president Matthew O'Grady said.
The school district will resume normal classes on Thursday, but all PARCC testing has been postponed until next week, the district's statement said.
Schools were already closed on Friday to observe Passover and Monday as a professional day.
O'Grady said counselors will be available again Thursday and Tuesday.
Mayer was named Robbinsville's superintendent in 2009 after holding teaching and administrator posts in districts in Pennsylvania and New Jersey.
Mourners packed a Robbinsville park Tuesday night to publicly mourn the married father of three who lived in Robbinsville. His wife, Donna, is a teacher in the district, as well.
News of his death reverberated beyond the township, and he's been remembered as a natural-born leader and family man who cared deeply for his students.
Mayer was active at Princeton Alliance Church in Plainsboro, where he was on the governing board and sometimes preached.
