LAWRENCE -- The Living Local Expo returns this weekend -- and it is bigger than ever.

Ten years ago when Lawrence hosted its first green fair, sustainability was still a new concept. But now as more and more people are jumping on the green bandwagon, the organizers want attendees to walk away not only energized, but with concrete steps they can take to lead a more eco-friendly lifestyle.

"In some ways, we all know a little bit, but it's amazing what people don't know even if they're interested in this topic," said Pam Mount, who owns Terhune Orchards. "The idea is hopefully to give people a wide range of actions. ... Small steps all add up."

It can be as simple as turning off the lights when you leave an empty room, not letting the water run while you brush your teeth or bringing reusable bags to shop.

The expo is organized by the Mercer County Sustainability Coalition, which is an alliance that was formed in 2013 to better coordinate the green teams and sustainability organizations throughout the county.

This year's theme is "Being Green Pays Off." Dozens of local businesses, nonprofits, community groups, local farms and speakers will be on hand to cover everything from bike paths and curbside food waste recycling programs to energy efficiency, electric cars and health and wellness. A farmers market will feature products from local farms and artisans.

Children's activities include a traveling zoo from 1 to 2 p.m. and crafting and decorating bird feeders from recycled milk containers.

As part of its zero-waste pledge, the vendors will produce less waste, not use styrofoam containers or any other packaging that is not biodegradable and recycle or compost whatever they can.

"Zero waste is more proactive at the consumption end rather than just recycling at the other end," Mount said.

The expo is Saturday from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. in the Rider University gym, 2083 Lawrenceville Road.
