The fire gutted a vacant row house and damaged two others on either side, firefighters said.
TRENTON - A two-alarm fire displaced at least six people early Wednesday morning when a vacant row house caught fire and burned portions of two adjacent homes, fire officials said.
A firefighter was treated at an area hospital for an ankle injury. No others were hurt in the 4 a.m. blaze, Trenton Battalion Chief Terry Mulryne said.
Firefighters were called to the 800 block of Liberty Street and found a middle house in a row of three with heavy fire on the first floor. The fire spread up the walls and into the roof areas of both adjacent houses, Mulryne said.
Residents from either side of the house were evacuated. Mulryne said there were at least six people.
The North Jersey office of the American Red Cross offered emergency shelter, food and clothing for a family of six, said Diane Concannon, Red Cross spokeswoman.
While battling the flames, a live utility wire fell and burned through a firehose. Firefighters sounded the second alarm, Mulryne said.
The fire was brought under control, but the row was left uninhabitable. The cause of the fire is under investigation, Mulryne said.
