A meeting being held in Flemington on Tuesday, March 8, 2016, includes representatives of the New Jersey Sierra Club and Delaware Riverkeeper Network.
FLEMINGTON - Environmental experts from around New Jersey are holding a town hall Tuesday to inform residents on how to stop the PennEast pipeline, the New Jersey Sierra Club has announced.
The meeting is being held 6:30-8:30 p.m. Tuesday in Building #1 at the Hunterdon County Library Complex, 314 Route 12, in Flemington.
"We must come together to protect the Delaware River Valley from the dangerous and destructive PennEast Pipeline that will cut an ugly scar through our communities," said Jeff Tittel, director of the New Jersey Sierra Club. "This town hall will update residents on our battle to stop the pipeline as well as upcoming actions to fight various regulatory approvals for PennEast Pipeline."
Among those scheduled to be in attendance Tuesday include the Delaware Riverkeeper Network, which recently filed suit against the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission in U.S. District Court charging that the commission's financing structure precludes it from an open, unbiased hearing of interstate pipeline applications.
PennEast is a consortium of natural gas companies, including all four New Jersey gas providers, that wants to build an 114-mile, 36-inch pipeline stretching from Northeastern Pennsylvania to Hopewell Township.
The company in September filed its formal application to the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission, which regulates pipelines that cross state lines. PennEast has said the company expects to start construction, if approved, in 2017.
