HAMILTON -- Hamilton will pay a public works truck driver $25,000 to settle a civil lawsuit he filed against the municipality alleging harassment.
Steve Astore sued the township last year. The township council voted this week to approve a settlement with him.
Township attorney Lindsay Burbage said at the council meeting that the settlement was, like other lawsuits the town has settled, an economic decision.
If Astore had prevailed in court, and won a lesser settlement, the township could be exposed to Astore's attorney fees, Burbage said.
The council did not discuss details of the case, but Burbage said Astore made allegations of harassment, being followed, and for a time was on leave from the township before returning to work.
A Hamilton official said Friday that Astore was still an employee of the township's Department of Public Works and has been working for Hamilton since 1996.
State of New Jersey pension data shows Astore currently earns an annual salary of $56,288.
Astore could not be reached for comment Friday.
