A truck jackknifed and overturned on I-295 Thursday morning, creating a miles-long backup in the area

LAWRENCE - A tractor-trailer overturned Thursday morning on I-295, causing a lengthy backup on the highway, State Police said.

All three northbound lanes were blocked at Sloan Avenue around 7:30 a.m. Traffic for about an hour used the shoulder of the road to pass until State Police began gradually opening lanes around 8:30 a.m., Sgt. Jeff Flynn said.

The driver of the truck, 55-year-old Raul Rao, was unharmed but trapped in his truck. There was a minor fuel spill on the road, Flynn said.

Rao was extricated from the truck and a hazardous materials crew was called out to clean up the fuel spill, Flynn said.

As of 9 a.m. the HAZMAT crew was on scene and one lane was re-opened, Flynn said. Traffic was backed up for miles.

It was not immediately known what caused the truck to overturn, Flynn said.
