All traffic on Friday was detoured around the Stony Brook Bridge, the state's oldest bridge Watch video
PRINCETON - Police Friday morning announced that Route 206 is closed in both directions at Stony Brook Bridge, the state's oldest span that had partially collapsed earlier in the week.
Local traffic is being diverted to Hutchinson Road to Mercer Street to Lovers Lane to avoid the bridge. Southbound traffic is being detoured to Lovers Lane to Mercer Street and trucks should take Carter Road into Hopewell Township and Route 518 back to 206, police said.
It was not immediately clear Friday morning what caused the closure.
Monday night, a portion of the stone railing on the historic bridge, near Quaker Bridge Road, collapsed on the southbound side overnight, prompting the state Department of Transportation to close the bridge for emergency repairs.
A concrete divider was installed on shoulder of the south lane, and both lanes of the bridge were open for rush-hour traffic Tuesday morning. A concrete barrier was planned for the northbound lane sometime Tuesday, officials said.
The bridge was first built in 1792, the same year the U.S. Mint and the U.S. Post Office were established and Kentucky was admitted as the 15th state.
The span was widened in 1916, but has not had major repair since then, Schapiro said.
