East Windsor will be giving away free gun locks to residents at the township police department and courthouse in March.

EAST WINDSOR -- The township announced Wednesday it will be distributing free gun locks to residents through the month of March, Mayor Janice Mironov said.

Mironov said for the township's Gun Safety Program's second year, gun locks will be provided free to the town by sponsor Project ChildSafe and there will be no cap on how many are distributed.

"These locks if properly used by lawful gun owners can help prevent accidental deaths or injuries in the home as well as deaths and injuries caused by the intentional misuse of guns," Mironov said in a Wednesday statement.

Through March, township residents can receive the gun locks or get information on how to secure them at the East Windsor Municipal Court and Police Department located at 80 One Mile Rd.

Proof of East Windsor residency is all that is needed to obtain a gun lock, the mayor said.

"The use of gun locks is a no-brainer, which keeps guns out of the hands of children and helps prevent unnecessary tragedies," the mayor said. "We hope that programs such as this will remind and educate lawful gun owners about their important responsibility to handle firearms safely and to store them in a secure manner."

Mironov said residents can also contact East Windsor Police Det. Brian Gorski at 609-448-5678, ext. 236 to secure a lock or get more information.
