Final beam placed on new college building in downtown Trenton

Mercer County Community College anticipates opening the building in August. It will have academic space and include a ground-floor art gallery.

TRENTON -- Mercer County Community College held a public celebration Friday for the placement of the final steel beam on the Trenton Hall Annex, which is under construction.

The annex is a three-story, 8,500-square-foot building on the college's James Kerney Campus on North Broad Street in the city. The total project cost if $5.9 million.

The college anticipates the annex opening in August. The building will house the college's new programs in security systems technology, cyber security, and existing classes in the health sciences.

Mercer County Executive Brian Hughes, Trenton Mayor Eric Jackson, Mercer County Freeholder Pat Colavita and the college's board of trustees chair Mark Matzen joined college president Jianping Wang at the ceremony.

"Mercer County Community College began in the City of Trenton and we remain committed to providing excellent education opportunities for our students and offering more degree programs in the city," Matzen said in a statement. 

In addition to academic spaces, the ground floor will house an art gallery slated to display the work of students and local artists.
