TRENTON -- The fire that damaged a duplex in the city's Island neighborhood Thursday evening displaced three adult residents, the Trenton Fire Department said Friday.
No residents or firefighters were injured during the blaze, which was reported at about 6:30 p.m. Thursday. Firefighters were at the scene until about 10:30 p.m., Battalion Chief Gus Takacs said.
The side of the Columbia Avenue duplex that burned was vacant, but the amount of fire caused enough damage to the attached, occupied residence that inspectors had to deem it uninhabitable, Takacs said.
The American Red Cross is assisting the three residents, the chief said.
Despite freezing conditions and a lot of fire in a large dwelling, firefighters were able to contain the flames to the one side of the structure with just a first alarm of fire companies, Tackas said.
The cause of the fire was undetermined as of Friday, Takacs said.
The fire department's fire marshal unit is investigating the fire with investigators from the Trenton police and Mercer County Prosecutor's Office.
