Today's letters: praise for Mercer County Executive Brian Hughes & criticizing Congressman Chris Smith

Congratulations to County Executive Brian Hughes on the vision for Mercer County expressed in his State of the County Address. Three of his proposals could make a big difference in helping to improve the lives of our residents. First, building a new passenger terminal for the Trenton-Mercer Airport would be a smart investment in our future and provide jobs. The $2 million per year already generated by the airport would help pay for this important project without burdening our taxpayers. Second, renewing the "Mercer at Play" grant program would support new park and recreation programs all across the county. The first round of these grants provided funding for twenty successful projects that have improved our quality of life. Finally, the focus on strengthening our workforce through education and training is one that we should all support. improving educational outcomes is one of the most important strategies for our county's future. We would need to ensure that appropriate educational opportunities are accessible to everyone in Mercer County, regardless of their background. Our county cannot succeed when any of us are held back.

Anthony S. Verrelli

Mercer County Improvement Authority executive

We've all been hearing about how Governor Christie hasn't spent much time in NJ because of his presidential aspirations but he's a piker compared to congressman Chris Smith.  The expression "where's Chris Smith" has been circulating for years and it's common knowledge that he spends maybe a few weeks total in the state any given year.  Unless he's leading a parade, getting an award, or being part of some dog & pony show event, Smith apparently doesn't have time to do what he's paid an outrageous salary for, such as being in touch with and discussing important issues with his constituents.  Maybe, considering Smith has such low regard for women making their own life decisions or treating LBGT people like second class citizens, its for the best.  The one thing we can count on with regard to Christie is that he'll be gone once his current term ends.  Unfortunately, that won't likely be the case with Smith.
