Man gets 7 years in prison for holding family hostage

Kevin Robinson was given seven years for holding his children and their mother hostage nearly two years ago.

TRENTON - A man who held his young children and their mother hostage during a police standoff two years ago was sentenced to seven years in prison recently.

Kevin Robinson, 23, was sentenced Friday on convictions of aggravated assault and possession of a weapon for an unlawful purpose in Mercer County Superior Court.

Robinson arrived at the 19-year-old mother's apartment on Coolidge Avenue in the early morning of Dec. 24, 2013 and the two began to argue, police have said.

The dispute escalated until around 6 a.m. when the 19-year-old texted her father to say Robinson was holding her against her will with a gun to her head.

The couple's 3-year-old daughter and 1-year-old son were in the apartment as well, police have said.

Officers arrived at apartment and found that the mother was in one room with the 1-year-old while Robinson was locked in another with the 3-year-old.

The mother escaped with the son when police arrived, but Robinson stayed with the daughter. For the next four hours police worked to get Robinson to give himself up, even bringing in Robinson's uncle to urge his nephew to leave the apartment, police have said.

Robinson ended the standoff and was arrested around 10 a.m.

Police found a loaded revolver inside the apartment after the standoff was over.

Robinson was initially charged with kidnapping, terroristic threats, two counts of aggravated assault, two counts of child endangerment, unlawful possession of a weapon, possession of a weapon for an unlawful purpose and contempt of court.

Two months ago, Robinson pleaded guilty to aggravated assault, possession of a weapon and making terroristic threats.

The seven year sentenced he received last week requires him to serve at least three years in prison before he is eligible for parole, according to the Mercer County Prosecutor's Office.
