Ralph frequents Route 130 in Hamilton and the Hogback Road area of Bordentown.

Perhaps you have seen him on Route 130 in Hamilton, or ambling down Hogback Road in Bordentown.

He's easy to spot - a tall, African American man with long black dreadlocks who wears a coat and pushes a bicycle containing all of his earthly possessions in plastic bags, slung across his handlebars.

His name is Ralph and he's been homeless since 1989.

Hamilton resident Erin Colon first noticed Ralph back in October, and whenever she saw him she would pull over to give him a little bit of money for assistance. Ralph was always polite, but kept his distance.

Last month, before the winter storm that clobbered the state with about 2 feet of snow, Colon passed Ralph on the highway and could not shake the questions that came to her mind: Where is Ralph going to sleep when the blizzard hits?

Haunted by the thought, Colon went to the Bordentown Motel and paid for a room for Ralph, kicking in enough for him to stay three days, she said.

The owners of the motel were aware of Ralph. He had stayed there before. Now all Colon had to do was find him.

On a mission, Colon put an "all points bulletin" out on Facebook, asking if anyone knew where he was. She found out that he was seen getting a police escort from the Hamilton Marketplace, and was most likely being brought to a shelter, she said.

Still, Colon kept the balance at the motel just in case.

A week later, on Jan. 27, she ran into Ralph as he was unpacking his bicycle. She pulled over and asked what he was doing.

He was planning to sleep under the bridge outside of the Marketplace. Colon explained to him that there was a room paid for at the Bordentown Motel, and he humbly accepted.

That got Colon to thinking again.

Winter is cold and brutal, and Ralph should be somewhere warm and dry, at least until spring, Colon thought.

So she set up a Facebook page, Rallying for Ralph, and explained her plans to help Ralph.

To her surprise, hundreds of people have donated cash to assist Ralph and Colon currently has enough money to keep Ralph at the motel until April 12.

"It really took off from there," Colon said of the page, which now has over 500 members.

Very little is known about Ralph, Colon said.

He is from Trenton and worked in New York, where he became unemployed. He may be homeless for for 30 years now, Colon said

Ralph eventually returned to Trenton, sleeping beneath the Trenton Makes Bridge and relying on the Trenton Soup Kitchen for food. He then migrated to the Bordentown-Hamilton area because Trenton was getting too dangerous, Colon said.

Colon recently collected birthday cards for Ralph at a local cafe, although she is not sure how old he is.

While some people are also donating gift cards to Shop Rite, Wawa and other stores to help Ralph get on his feet, Colon said Ralph does not expect anything.

She asks people not to approach him, as he is "extremely private," and has even rejected an offer of a microwave and mini-fridge.

However, any donations Ralph refuses will be donated to the Rescue Mission in Trenton or a similar organization helping the homeless in Trenton, Colon said.

While gift cards are a great idea, Colon said a birthday card - even a homemade one - is just as good.

"Ralph has been homeless for almost thirty years. Let's make this his best birthday yet," Colon said. Ralph's birthday is this week, although the exact dat is unknown.
