The Mercer County Wildlife Center will be holding orientations for new volunteers in March and April at the Hopewell facility.

HOPEWELL TOWNSHIP -- The Mercer County Wildlife Center treated 2,200 birds, mammals and reptiles in 2015 and they need new volunteers, the center said.

The center will be holding orientations for new volunteers in March and April at the Hopewell facility.

"This facility is one of a kind, both in terms of quality of care provided by the staff, including seven volunteer veterinarians, and the high volume of animals that are treated," Mercer County Executive Brian M. Hughes said in a statement.

Hughes said the volunteers who work there are indispensable and urged anyone who might be interested to attend a session.

Volunteer orientation sessions are scheduled for 10 a.m. to 12 noon Saturday, March 19, and 10 a.m. to 12 noon Sunday, April 3. Volunteers only need to attend one.

Volunteers must, however, be able to commit to a four-hour shift once a week from April until September, the center said. This commitment is necessary because of the feeding schedule requirements and housing demands of the animals.

Duties include cage cleaning, diet preparation, laundry and many other behind-the-scenes opportunities, the center said. Volunteers must be at least 18 years of age and have a current tetanus vaccine.

The center is located on Route 29 in Hopewell Township, approximately 12 miles north of Trenton.

To register for either orientation session, or for more information, contact volunteer coordinator Jane Rakos-Yates at 609-303-0552 ext. 103 or jrakosyates@mercercounty.org.
