Hamilton Mayor Kelly Yaede will be out of the office for a few days
HAMILTON -- Hamilton Mayor Kelly Yaede was tested for Lyme disease Thursday and will be out of the office for a few days, her office confirmed.
"As a precaution, she is beginning to be treated for it although she does not yet have test results to confirm," the mayor's office said in a statement.
The disease is transmitted through the bites of infected deer ticks.
Symptoms include a fever, headache and fatigue and a rash that looks like a bull's eye on the tick bite. Most people recover with antibiotics. If left untreated, the infection can cause arthritis and more severe problems.
About 30,000 U.S. cases are reported each year to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, but studies suggest there actually are as many as 10 times more.
Yaede was sworn in to her first full four-year term in January by U.S. Supreme Court Justice Samuel A. Alito, Jr.
