"Everyone at Catholic Charities was deeply saddened by yesterday's discovery and we want this young person to know that we are keeping her in our prayers," said Lisa M. Thibault, charity spokeswoman. "She put her trust in us and we want her to know that the box and its contents were treated respectfully. We urge her to contact us for confidential counseling."

Workers discovered the fetus in a box left outside the charity's administrative offices in the 300 block of West State Street around 12 p.m. Wednesday, police have said.

Police sources also said a note found with the box indicated that the woman who left the fetus did not know what else to do with it after having a miscarriage.

The fetus was taken to the Mercer County Medical Examiner's office for further investigation. Trenton Detective Craig Kirk is investigating and city police are in contact with the Mercer County Prosecutor's Office, police have said.

Trenton Police Lt. Stephen Varn said the investigation was continuing Thursday, but no new information was being released.

Catholic Charities, run by the Diocese of Trenton, provides mental health, social and crisis services, particularly those affected by trauma and adversity.

"We offer walk-in counseling at the Early Intervention Support Service in Trenton, their number is 609-256-4200 and they are available from 8am until 9pm Monday through Friday," Thibault said.
