21-year-old Jakeem N. Gibbs dragged Morrisville, Pa. Police Officer Lee Matthews in July 2015.
A 21-year-old Trenton man who dragged a Morrisville, Pa. police officer with his car last summer was sentenced to 15 to 30 months in prison, the Bucks County District Attorney's Office announced.
Jakeem N. Gibbs pleaded guilty to aggravated assault, fleeing police, possession with intent to deliver drugs and recklessly endangering another person, the office said in a statement.
A plea agreement with Gibbs also calls for two years of probation and $2,581.70 in restitution for Officer Lee Matthews' injuries, the statement said.
In court Wednesday, Gibbs said he was using eight bags of heroin per day at the time and was selling the drug to support his habit. "I'd like to apologize" for injuring Matthews, he told a judge. "I panicked at the time."
Gibbs said in court he has stopped using heroin. Under questioning from the judge, Gibbs said he suffers from mental health problems, for which he has received treatment in the past.
He also acknowledged having been shot on two different occasions, suffering six gunshot wounds, the district attorney's statement said.
Matthews suffered lacerations to his arms, knees and hands during the July 2015 confrontation with Gibbs.
The district attorney's office said Matthews had been investigating a report of drug sales at a Morrisville gas station and approached Gibbs as he sat in a Nissan Altima.
Gibbs refused to exit the vehicle and sped away, pulling Matthews with him for a short distance, the statement said.
Gibbs initially fled Morrisville and crossed into Trenton.
The next day, police executed a search warrant at Morrisville apartment where Gibbs was living at the time, the statement said.
During the police search, the statement said, Gibbs attempted to throw packets of heroin out of his bathroom window. Officers recovered 100 bags of the drug, which Gibbs admitted to possessing.
