Workers discovered the fetus in a box left outside the charity's administrative offices in the 300 block of West State Street, police spokesman Lt. Stephen Varn said.

"Workers found a box containing what is believed to be a human fetus, as well as a note,'' Varn said.

Varn said he did not know what the note said.

But police sources said the note indicated that the woman who left the fetus did not know what else to do with it after having a miscarriage.

The fetus was taken to the Mercer County Medical Examiner's office for further investigation. Trenton Detective Craig Kirk is investigating and city police are in contact with the Mercer County Prosecutor's Office, Varn said.

Catholic Charities, run by the Diocese of Trenton, provides mental health, social and crisis services, particularly those affected by trauma and adversity.

Catholic Charities Spokeswoman Lisa Thibault said she was aware that the police took away a suspicious package found there Wednesday, but she said she was unaware what was inside.
