The mayor is now expected to come Feb. 2 and City Council would then vote on Feb. 4

TRENTON -- Trenton Mayor Eric Jackson was slated to appear before City Council on Tuesday to present his choices for three new city judges, but the advice and consent was postponed to a later date.

The mayor is now expected to come Feb. 2 and City Council would then vote on Feb. 4.

"We want to ensure that 100 percent of our information is in on all the candidates," city spokesman Michael Walker said. "We expect that process to be finalized by Jan. 26, at which time, we will be ready to present them to council in February."

After the four judges' terms expired last summer, Jackson said he had the power to either reappoint them or replace them. After interviewing more than a dozen candidates, he decided not to reappoint Chief Judge Harold George and Judges John McCarthy and Gregory Williams.

Jackson is choosing to appoint Judge Rodney Thompson, the only holdover, as chief judge.

The mayor said last week that he sought to broaden the diversity of the municipal court when he decided on the three new judges. His nominees are Emilia Perez, William Sitzler and Geraldine Eure.

Perez has served in the City of Newark's law department since 2008 -- both as an assistant corporation counsel for civil litigation and an assistant municipal prosecutor.

Sitzler, whose now-defunct law firm Saponaro and Sitzler has had contracts with the city, has also served as Trenton's special counsel for alcoholic beverage control matters. Last June, he returned to solo practice and was appointed as a judge in Mount Holly.

Eure, who served on the school board from 1993 to 2007, was most recently an attorney for Consolidated Edison. She would serve as a part-time judge.
