A $1M bail was maintained for Ronald Hawkins, 58, in the stabbing of his girlfriend earlier this month.
TRENTON - Ronald Hawkins told his girlfriend to pray before stabbing her nearly to death and running before police showed up, prosecutors said Wednesday.
Hawkins, 58, was arrested for attempted murder shortly after the stabbing on Jan. 2 while his girlfriend was rushed to the hospital for multiple stab wounds to her upper body.
A bail hearing was scheduled for Hawkins Wednesday during which prosecutors related the girlfriend's version of events and some of the evidence police had uncovered during the investigation.
Superior Court Judge Peter Warshaw chose to keep Hawkins' bail at $1 million after the hearing Wednesday.
Police have said they arrived at an apartment in Kingsbury Towers around 11:30 a.m. on Jan 2 to find the girlfriend - a 49-year-old woman stabbed repeatedly inside.

The girlfriend was found, "lying in a pool of blood," with stab wounds to her stomach and upper body said Casey DeBlasio, spokeswoman for the Mercer County Prosecutor's Office.
Hawkins told the girlfriend, "You better pray (expletive), you going to die," before stabbing her, prosecutors say.
Lt. Stephen Varn has said the woman and Hawkins got into a fight that morning before he grabbed a kitchen knife, stabbed her and left the apartment.
Police found Hawkins a short time later on Market Street at the Route 1 overpass and arrested him without incident.
DeBlasio said when police found him, Hawkins was covered in blood and had a laceration on his hand.
He was being held in lieu of the $1 million bail Wednesday and ordered not to have contact with the woman.
