HOPEWELL TOWNSHIP - A wood stove is being blamed for a morning fire that left a house uninhabitable and put two people in the care of the local Red Cross, police said Tuesday.
Hopewell Township police and fire crews arrived at a house on Route 518 between Route 579 and New Road around 9:45 a.m. where flames were jutting out of the house's chimney, Lt. Christopher H. Kascik said.
The two people inside had been burning a fire in their wood-burning stove. They left the house unharmed, Kasick said.
The smoke and fire left the house uninhabitable. The two residents were being helped by the North Jersey chapter of the Red Cross and the Hopewell Township Health Department, Kasick said.
Police and the Hopewell Valley Emergency Services are investigating, Kasick said.
