A 24-year-old man was walking on the 800 block of Stuyvesant Avenue around 8:30 p.m. Sunday when he heard six to seven shots ring out before he realized he was hit by gunfire, Lt. James Slack said.

The man was taken to Capital Health Regional Medical Center in Trenton, where he was treated for gunshot wounds to his back and right thigh. He was listed in stable condition, Slack said.

A semi-automatic handgun and four 9mm shell casings were found at the scene, Slack said.

The shooting response team is investigating, Slack said.

It was not immediately known if Sunday's shooting was related to any of the four other shootings over the weekend that killed two people.

Mayor Eric E. Jackson sought to assuage Trenton residents' fears in a Facebook post Monday afternoon, saying he was "deeply concerned'' about the recent spate of shootings.

"Let me be clear, Trenton is a safe community,'' Jackson said. "Even so, it is tainted as many urban areas are with the threat of gun violence, and therefore part of the national conversation that has garnered attention in recent weeks."

Jackson reminded residents of the Trenton Police Department's anonymous online tip site, My Block, and asked anyone with information to contact authorities.

"Together, we will keep our citizens and city safe and continue to work toward a brighter economic future,'' he said.
