TRENTON -- Dozens of volunteers spent Sunday morning cleaning up trash and plucking weeds from Trenton's Battle Monument park.
The group collected trash, cleared overgrown grass and weeds, re-stained benches and repaired chain fencing.
The cleanup was organized by North Ward Councilwoman Marge Caldwell-Wilson and volunteers included Joint Base McGuire-Dix-Lakehurst's Team Red, White and Blue, VFW Lodge 7298, A Better Way, Trenton Pork Roll Festival organizer Scott Miller and his team from Exit7A and other residents.
Caldwell-Wilson last year bought a new American flag with her own money to replace the tattered one that had been flying over the park and raised donations to restore the rusted flagpole.

The monument commemorates the American victory at the first Battle of Trenton on Dec. 26, 1776. It was at the "Five Points" intersection of North Broad Street, Warren Street and Brunswick, Pennington and Princeton avenues that the American artillery was placed.
From this vantage point, the artillery dominated the streets of Trenton, preventing the Hessian troops from organizing an effective counter attack.
