HAMILTON - A fire that broke out in a home on the afternoon of New Year's Eve was started by a heater sitting too close to a bed, firefighters said.

The fire started around 4:30 p.m. Thursday at a house on the 1700 block of East State Street. Firefighters responded to the area to find that a heater which sat next to the bed in the bedroom, had started a fire, according to the fire department.

Everyone who was in the house at the time of the fire had gotten out before firefighters arrived.

Firefighters worked to extinguish the flames and had the fire under control within minutes, according to the department.

Thursday's was the second fire on that block in the past month. In mid-December a woman was sent to the hospital with minor burns to her hands and feet after a fire broke out on the 1700 block of East State Street.

Atiya "Tia" Dixon, the woman injured in that fire recently spoke with NJ.com about the experience and how local nonprofit, HomeFront, helped replace much of what she lost in the flames.
